Rachel E. Fabi, Ph.D.

Hello!

My name is Rachel Fabi. I’m an Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Education in the Center for Bioethics and Humanities at SUNY Upstate Medical University. I also serve on the Ethics Consult Service and Hospital Ethics Committee at Upstate University Hospital, and I’m a Faculty Research Affiliate at the Syracuse University Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion. I received my Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management, in the Bioethics and Health Policy track, at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. I was honored to serve as the 2019-2021 National Academy of Medicine Greenwall Fellow in Bioethics. I have served on the board of directors for the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities since 2021, and in 2024 I was elected to serve on the ASBH Board’s Executive Committee as Secretary.

My research focuses primarily on the ethics of policies that affect the health of immigrants and refugees in the United States. This includes policies affecting access to care for undocumented immigrants, the resettlement of refugees, the treatment of people in immigration detention, and how institutional policies can protect immigrants’ health care rights and privacy.

Outside of the office, I enjoy hiking, geocaching, and biking in the Central New York region. I am also a Jeopardy! champion and an avid fan of trivia. I solve and construct crossword puzzles in a variety of mainstream newspapers (like USA Today and the New York Times) and indie crossword outlets (like Autostraddle and Queer Qrosswords). I also created and co-edit These Puzzles Fund Abortion, a crossword puzzle pack that raises money for independent abortion funds. I have three pets: a dog (Hazel), a cat (Oliver), and a sourdough starter (Fitzgerald).
